From Dunkerque to Mortagne-du-Nord
From Dunkirk to Mortagne-du-Nord, the countryside that the canal crosses, and its concrete banks, is pretty drab. But the size of the convoys encountered, the towns that are crossed and the presence of recreational sailors coming from England makes the route attractive. The giant lock at Les Fontinettes (PK 106) has replaced the fine lift of 1888, which has been retained for its heritage and tourist interest.
- The "Broad Section" takes the Mardyck branch, the Bourbourg canal, the Upper Colme canal, the Aa, the Neufossé canal, the Aire canal, the Deûle canal, the Scarpe diversion and the Sensée canal, before joining the Escaut.
